In international logistics, even the most carefully planned shipment does not always fit into a standard process. The reason may be the size of the cargo, its specific characteristics, the lack of direct connections to the destination, an urgent deadline, or special requirements for packing, securing and preparing the load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In these situations, the difference between a successful shipment and a seemingly impossible problem often comes down to the experience of the freight forwarder managing the operation: knowing how to respond when the dimensions provided do not match the actual measurements, when the required packaging simply does not exist off the shelf, or when the most obvious route is not a viable option. Here are three very different real-life cases handled by CTI that show what managing a non-standard shipment actually involves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let us start with one of the most unusual shipments we have handled in recent months: transporting a 12-metre yacht weighing around 20 tonnes by sea, without having the vessel sail under its own power to the port of departure. So how do you move a boat of this size without putting it in the water?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first step was to build a custom cradle designed to support the hull during the overland journey and arrange an exceptional road transport service to the port. Once there, the yacht and its cradle were secured onto a MAFI, the mobile platform used for handling cargo inside the port, and loaded onto the upper deck of the vessel above the containers because of its oversized dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shipments like this also come with another common challenge: the actual dimensions of the cargo can turn out to be slightly different from the measurements originally provided. When that happens, it is the freight forwarder\u2019s job to adapt quickly and keep the operation moving without unnecessary delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second case is completely different, but the underlying principle is the same. When the cargo is a luxury car \u2014 and in this case a Ferrari \u2014 every stage of the shipment has to be managed with precision. It is not simply a matter of transporting a high-value asset; the vehicle must also arrive in exactly the same condition in which it left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The process begins with collection from the shipper using a car transporter and delivery to the warehouse, where the CTI team checks the fuel level and disconnects the battery for safety reasons. The vehicle is then loaded into the container with the help of a recovery truck and secured using dedicated restraint systems to ensure it remains completely stable throughout the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With shipments of this kind, where the value of the cargo is particularly high, there is no room for improvisation. Every step follows precise, tested and repeatable procedures designed to minimise risk and protect the vehicle throughout the entire transport process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The third case involved a very different challenge, this time related less to the cargo itself and more to the available route. A client in the eyewear industry needed to ship a consignment to Aruba that included, among other items, display towers standing more than two metres high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were no direct cargo flights from Europe to the island, while the size of the packages made standard passenger flights unsuitable. Sea freight would have taken several months, which was far longer than the client could afford to wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In practical terms, there was no standard shipping solution that could be applied. This is exactly where the flexibility of an experienced freight forwarder becomes essential. CTI designed a custom route: the cargo was flown to Miami, where a local agent took over and arranged the final cargo connection to Aruba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unlike the previous two cases, the complexity here did not come primarily from the physical characteristics of the goods, but from the lack of a direct connection between the point of origin and the final destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Situations like this are more common than many businesses expect. A missing route, an unexpected disruption that forces plans to change, or the closure of a strategic connection can require an entire shipment to be reorganised. Knowing which alternatives are available \u2014 and when and how to activate them \u2014 makes it possible to absorb these complications without passing the consequences on to the customer in terms of either transit time or service reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As these three examples show, the shipments themselves could hardly be more different: a 20-tonne yacht, a high-value sports car and a consignment of display equipment bound for a Caribbean island. Yet each operation was managed using the same underlying approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everything starts with a careful assessment of the cargo and its actual dimensions, followed by the selection of the most appropriate packaging, cradle or support system to protect it throughout the journey. The next step is planning how the cargo will be loaded and secured, which requires specific technical expertise, particularly when dealing with oversized freight or especially valuable goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is followed by selecting the most effective transport methods and routes, taking into account both the physical characteristics of the shipment and the actual connections available to the destination. Finally, constant coordination with ports, carriers and local partners ensures that every stage remains under control, while alternative solutions are kept ready in case something changes along the way \u2014 because unexpected events are part of everyday life in international logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ultimately, these cases show that with the right experience, even a shipment that initially appears impossible can be turned into a practical and manageable operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
